A Note from the Founder
I’ve always been in love with nature.
As a Girl Scout growing up in Northern California, I spent weekends beneath redwood canopies and along the tidepools of Fitzgerald and Elkhorn Slough—learning to read the wind at Point Reyes and spot a banana slug from a wet leaf at a glance. I learned “Leave No Trace” before long division, but more importantly, I learned to notice: how everything in nature adapts, balances, and solves problems with quiet ingenuity.
That curiosity became a question that wouldn't let go: if a single tidepool can filter water, regulate temperature, and support dozens of species in perfect balance, why can't our cities do the same?
In 9th grade, I founded the International Youth Biomimicry Society to explore questions like these with others. What began as a small group of curious makers has grown into a global community. Today, students are designing concepts like whale-inspired filters to clean oceans, bioluminescent streetlights powered by algae, and AI tools that help restore coral reefs—learning not just about nature, but from it.

Our Mission
Ignite a passion for nature-inspired innovation in diverse young minds and empower them to solve humanity’s greatest challenges by learning from the world’s most successful designer—-nature.
What Is Biomimicry?
Biomimicry is all about learning from and copying nature’s forms, processes, and ecosystems to solve real-world problems.
Did you know nature has already perfected solutions over 3.8 billion years? From self-cleaning lotus leaves to hummingbird wings that inspired ultra-efficient drones, nature holds the blueprints to innovation.
Why It Matters
We live in a world shaped by environmental challenges. Now more than ever, we need sustainable ideas to tackle problems like climate change, resource shortages, and pollution.
Biomimicry gives us a way forward. It uses nature’s proven solutions to inspire breakthroughs in technology, design, and more—helping us create a future that works in harmony with our planet.
Join The Global Youth Movement
At IYBS, young people from around the world are turning observation into action. Together, we’re shaping a Nature Positive future through creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
